FORT BENNING, Ga. – A December 2019 view of sunset, looking across Choctawhatchee Bay from the Destin Army Recreation Area, in the Florida panhandle, about 220 miles south of Fort Benning. The resort is popular with members of the U.S. military community. When Hurricane Michael tore through the region in October 2018, it did major damage to the recreation area's marina, seawall and boating channel. Work has begun on repairing the seawall. The marina was repaired last year. Plans also call for a project that will eventually dredge the boating channel.
