Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Jim Hickerson, a former prisoner of war, and his wife Carole hold hands during a ceremony for National POW/MIA Recognition Day at the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) facility in Honolulu, Hawaii, Sept. 18, 2020. First established in 1979, through a proclamation from President Jimmy Carter, National POW/MIA Recognition Day is an observance to honor and recognize the sacrifices of those Americans who have been a POW, and to remind the nation of those who are still MIA. DPAA is conducting worldwide operations to provide the fullest possible accounting of those classified as still missing. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Jacqueline A. Clifford)
