An alligator rests in Lake Okeechobee’s wetlands, June 9, 2020, Okee-Tantie Marina, Fla. From the 1800’s to the mid 1900’s the alligator was listed as an endangered species because it was hunted and poached. Now there are approximately a million alligators in the state of Florida and they play an important role in maintaining ecological diversity in our wetlands.
