U.S. Air Force Airman Nathan Lott, 312th Training Squadron fire protection student, cuts a 4x4 foot exhaust port in an artificial rooftop during his vertical ventilation training exercise at the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy on Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, Dec. 10, 2020. Lott’s cut position was decided by multiple factors, but the most important was wind direction and location of the simulated fire. The cutting pattern was started furthest from the egress point and worked back towards the ladder to prevent the firefighters from cutting off their escape path should new hazards arise.
