U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District contractor Ryba Marine Construction Co. dredges the Toledo Harbor shipping channel, Toledo, OH, November 4, 2020. Consequences of Not Maintaining the Project:
➢ Light loading: loss of between 2 and 3 feet of channel depth may result in increased transportation costs of between $4,706,000 and $9,666,000 annually.
➢ Closing the harbor to commercial traffic requires commodities transported by rail and truck. This could increase annual emission rates by over 75,696 tons of harmful particulate matter and increase costs by an estimated $14,104,000 due to increased railroad-related accidents and an estimated $22,807,000 due to increased trucking-related accidents.
