Paratroopers with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, conduct a live-mortar fire exercise at Al Asad Air Base, Iraq, Dec. 29, 2020. The mortarman fired 120mm practice rounds into the desert outside of the base to hone their indirect fire skills. Mortars are suppressive indirect fire weapons and can be employed to neutralize or destroy an area or pointed targets, screen large areas with smoke, and provide illumination or coordinated high-explosive illumination.
