U.S. Army Cpt. Miles Skelar, a veterinarian with the 993rd Medical Detachment Veterinary Services out of Aurora Colo., examines the blood bag to ensure a sufficient amount has been drawn from a soldier during a blood drive at Al Asad Air Base, Iraq, Dec. 29, 2020. After being initially screened during a walking blood bank drive earlier in the year, the Soldiers reported to the Role II compound to donate blood for future use in case of a mass casualty event. The blood drive allowed the combat medics to extract blood from pre-identified individuals with critical blood types for a walking blood bank in the event of receiving a critically injured patient.
