The Union Monument at Finn’s Point National Cemetery, Pennsville, N.J., Dec. 18, 2020. The Monument was installed in 1879 in memory of 135 Union guards, 105 are listed on the marble obelisk, who died while on duty at Fort Delaware during the Civil War and were interred at the cemetery. The Cemetery is administered by the National Cemetery Administration, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The land, which was originally purchased to build a gun battery to protect Philadelphia, was used as a burial site for Confederate prisoners of war who died while imprisoned at Fort Delaware, as well as their Union Guards.
