KINGS BAY, Ga. (Jan. 8, 2021) Capt. Craig Gummer, commodore, Submarine Squadron 20 (left) presents Lt. Cmdr. Ryan Wisz, engineering officer (center) and Master Chief Machinist’s Mate (Nuclear) Nick Bottoms, Engineering Department master chief, of the Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine USS Rhode Island (SSBN 740) (Gold) with the Engineering Excellence award onboard Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia. The award is given to the leading engineering department selected by the squadron. Rhode Island is one of six ballistic-missile submarines stationed at the base and is capable of carrying up to 20 submarine-launched ballistic missiles with multiple warheads.
