Sunburst Youth Challenge Academy Class 27 candidates wear personal protective equipment while forming up outside before entering classrooms — a few at a time — to take placement tests, Jan. 12, 2021, at Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, California. Sunburst is one of three National Guard youth challenge programs facilitated by the California Military Department and works to provide at-risk teens a foundation for success in education, personal life and future careers. Sunburst works in partnership with the Orange County Department of Education to deliver educational curriculum to cadets who work continue working toward earning their high school diplomas during the program.
