Sunburst Youth Challenge Academy Class 27 candidates are physically distanced inside a classroom while taking placement tests, Jan. 12, 2021, at Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, California, as their teacher watches in real time from a remote location. Sunburst is one of three National Guard youth challenge programs facilitated by the California Military Department and works to provide at-risk teens a foundation for success in education, personal life and future careers. Sunburst works in partnership with the Orange County Department of Education to deliver educational curriculum to cadets who work continue working toward earning their high school diplomas during the program.
