Lantern Slide 17: The Washington Monument and Agriculture Building in 1876. The ponds near the base of the Monument were formed when the Washington Canal was filled and B Street, the present day Constitution Avenue, because a road of sorts. The cornerstone of the Monument was laid July 4, 1848. It had reached 174 feet when funds ran out and the Civil War was in progress. Construction commenced again in 1876. The Agricultrue Building was built in 1868.
