Lantern Slide 42: West wing of the old Naval Observatory as viewed from the front (north); 1888. The extreme right portion was added in 1868 to house the 8 ½-inch transit circle made by Pistor-Martins. The smaller section was used as a clock room. The portion immediately next to the main building housed first the mural circle (12 August 1844 – 1845), then the 5.3-inch transit instrument (1844 – 1864; actually there was about a year overlap between the mural circle and transit instrument), then the 8.5-inch T.C. started 1870, and then the library. The east wing contained a 4-inch German meridian circle until the mural circle joined it. The Transit instrument replaced the meridian circle.
