Marine Corps Maj. Brad “HJOP” Leeman, Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 23, holds an Italian flag while flying one of two F-35B’s from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland to the Italian aircraft carrier ITS Cavour (CVH 550), March 1, 2021. Leeman and Royal Navy Lt. Cmdr. Barry “Baz” Pilkington, VX-23, conducted the fly-on of the two F-35B variants used by the F-35 Pax River Integrated Test Force and Italian Navy personnel for the F-35B Sea Trials aboard the carrier. Flight test of the F‐35B Lightning II aboard ITS Cavour is a key milestone toward Italy’s carrier qualifications with its own F‐35Bs, and ultimately achieving Italy’s strategic goal of being Ready for Operations.
