Brig. Gen. James M. Smith, Chief of Transportation, pins the Bronze Star Medal with “V” device on the suit jacket of former Army Spc. 4 Ronald Mallory during a presentation ceremony March 4 at the Army Transportation Museum, Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Mallory was cited for his bravery during a Feb. 23, 1971 convoy attack near An Khe, Vietnam. Smith said Mallory's sense of teamwork and willingness to accomplish the mission were impressive and worthy of the award that was long overdue. The presentation capped a near 50-year effort to formally acknowledge Mallory's heroics.
