Sgt. Maj. Ronald L. Whittington attributes his success to Montford Point Marines like Pfc. Southern Nixon Jr. who paved the way for African Americans to serve in the Marine Corps. Pfc. Southern Nixon Jr. was recently awarded the Congressional Gold Medal- the highest civilian honor awarded by Congress- during a ceremony at Woodland Middle School in Stockbridge, Ga., where he now serves as a nutrition assistant.
