Kenneth Lyon, firefighter paramedic with Fire and Emergency Services, administers the first dose of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to base personnel at Production Plant Barstow, Marine Depot Maintenance Command on the Yermo Annex aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California, March 3. The Moderna version of the vaccine requires two doses, 28 days apart. The first dose offers over 60 percent immunity and introduces the immune system to the outer shell of the virus and typically has little to no side effects other than a sore arm. The second dose is a heavier priming of the immune system as the immune system recognizes the outer shell of the virus faster and provides a robust response and over 90 percent immunity. Some recipients report exhaustion, fever and body aches for a couple of days after the second dose, which is normal.
