The NAVSUP FLC San Diego Commanding Officer Captain Timothy Brown, pins a Civilian Service Commendation Medal on Digna Feria, a supervisory chemist with NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center San Diego Fuels Department, during an award ceremony held at Naval Base Point Loma, Calif., March 25, 2021. Brown presented Feria with the medal for her 41 years of service to the Navy as a chemist with the command's petroleum laboratory. Feria's expertise and numerous achievements have had a major impact on mission of FLC San Diego, and the Navy. Specifically, in 2007 and 2008, her efforts determined the root cause of the of the explosions on the USS Howard and USS Halsey as being caused by the lubricants being heated to their explosive limits in the reduction gear sumps. In 2013, her technical proficiency was called upon to analyze issues with toxicity off gassing of hydrogen sulfide effluents emanating from the Fuel Oil Recovery Plant - an accomplishment that helped FLC San Diego win the prestigious CNO Environmental Sustainability Award in 2014. She plans to spend more time with her family during her retirement.
