A phainopepla, also known as “silky-flycatcher” pauses briefly on a tree branch March 4, 2021, at Travis Air Force Base, California. These glossy birds can be found eating berries of the parasitic mistletoe plant growing on oak and sycamore trees of California and Arizona. Travis AFB’s Natural Resources Program is responsible for surveys, analysis and documentation of threatened and endangered species, wetlands, forest resources and other field studies.
