U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Julian Taruc, 9th Engineer Support Battalion Humanitarian Civic Assistance site two lead, poses for a photo during Exercise Balikatan in Barangay Ilosong, Plaridel, Ph., April 13, 2021. Balikatan is an annual exercise between the U.S. and the Philippines and comes from a Tagalog phrase meaning "shoulder-to-shoulder," representing the partnership between the two countries. "I was born in Virginia Beach and came to the Philippines for my senior year of high school where I graduated from the International School of Manila. I’m definitely excited to be back, especially to build this school. There’s definitely a sense of pride with coming back here because both of my parents came from the Philippines. Both of them were really poor so just being able to do my part and build a school over here feels pretty good.”
