U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Juan P. Amio, a preventive medicine technician with 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, poses for a photo on Camp Courtney, Okinawa, Japan, April 28, 2021.
“I’m originally from the Philippines. My family migrated in 1997 to Guam, and we were there for three years. From there my family migrated to Virginia Beach, and that’s where I was recruited. I joined a little later, at 21, because I figured I’d go to school first but found that school wasn’t for me. I had to find a better aspect of what I wanted to do with my life, and the Navy was it. I’ve been in the Navy 13 years now, and it has taught me so many life lessons and provided me so many things like job security – to provide for my family. It has taught me resilience, how to work with different personalities, and it taught me how to be a better person and leader as well.
I’ve been out here for about a year and two months. Okinawa has been great. I love the weather. My family loves it here, and the unit I’m with right now is pretty amazing. 3D MEB is different than what I’ve experienced in the past. I’m used to being with a division. So now it’s a higher headquarters and a lot of administrative taskers and planning to support the mission. What I do is assist with medical threats such as vector-borne diseases, mosquitoes, water safety, and heat and cold safety that are in the areas of our mission. I personally like deploying and being on the operational side, so getting to go on exercises with the MEB – I take pride in that. When you go out and see the mission success, it’s a pretty amazing feeling to have.”
