Sailors and Marines, along with family members and friends, watch from the bow of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) as the ship departs Pearl Harbor. Family members and friends are currently on board Makin Island for a tiger cruise as the ship returns to its home port in San Diego. Makin Island and embarked Marines assigned to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit are deployed to the U.S. 3rd Fleet area of operations.
