Just pinned Navy chiefs are “piped aboard” after receiving their anchors during the chief petty officer pinning ceremony at the Fort Sam Houston Theatre, Sept. 14. The new chiefs walk across a red carpet, while a Navy boatswain’s mate blows a bosun pipe, announcing their arrival in rank and as recognition of their achievements. On board ship, flag-rank officers and important guests are announced or “piped aboard” when they arrive, and “piped ashore” when they depart. Vice Adm. Matthew Nathan, surgeon general of the Navy, attended the ceremony during his visit at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.
