Radar platforms at the Fort Hancock Nike missile battery, NY-56, which was part of the New York Defense Area at Fort Hancock, Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook, N.J., May 13, 2021. The site was activated in 1955 and continued operations through 1974. NY-56 included a missile launch area and an integrated fire control area that controlled and guided the missiles. Both the Nike Ajax MIM-3 (Mobile Interceptor Missile, design 3) – the world's first operational guided surface-to-air missile and the Nike Hercules MIM-14 were deployed at the site.
