A U.S. Army Nike Ajax MIM-3, foreground, (Mobile Interceptor Missile, design 3), the world's first operational guided surface-to-air missile, and a Nike Hercules MIM-14 (Mobile Interceptor Missile, design 14) on display at Fort Hancock, Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook, N.J., May 13, 2021. The Nike Hercules replaced the Nike Ajax MIM-3 and was capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads. Both missiles were deployed at the Fort Hancock Nike missile battery, NY-56, which was part of the New York Defense Area. The site was activated in 1955 and continued operations through 1974. NY-56 included a missile launch area and an integrated fire control area that controlled and guided the missiles. (New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs photo by Mark C. Olsen)
