LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Command Sgt. Maj. Steven Veazey, Arkansas National Guard senior enlisted leader; and Sgt. Ryan Bruce, a recruiter at the Little Rock Recruiting Station; were the honorary cake cutters June 14, 2021, at the Army's 246th birthday ceremony at the Arkansas State Capitol. As is custom, the youngest and oldest Soldiers present cut the cake. Bruce, 26, was the youngest Soldier present, and Veazey, 59, with 42 years of service the oldest. The Army is the nation’s oldest military institution. On June 14, 1775, Congress "Resolved, That six companies of expert riflemen, be immediately raised in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia… [and] as soon as completed, shall march and join the army near Boston, to be there employed as light infantry, under the command of the chief Officer in that army." The next day Congress voted and appointed George Washington to command the Continental forces, which laid the foundation for the Army of today, according to an Army website devoted to the history of the Army’s birthday.
