LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- David Dorrough, the state’s Army Reserve ambassador, presents a check to Cabot’s Bryana Langford at the Army’s 246th birthday celebration June 14, 2021, at the Arkansas State Capitol. The funds will be used to pay for college at the University of Central Arkansas while she’s in the Army ROTC program at UCA. The Army is the nation’s oldest military institution. On June 14, 1775, Congress "Resolved, That six companies of expert riflemen, be immediately raised in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia… [and] as soon as completed, shall march and join the army near Boston, to be there employed as light infantry, under the command of the chief Officer in that army." The next day Congress voted and appointed George Washington to command the Continental forces, which laid the foundation for the Army of today, according to an Army website devoted to the history of the Army’s birthday.
