Old wire ropes covered in grease are used inside the control tower to open the dam gates at the East Branch Clarion River Lake in Wilcox, Pennsylvania. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District is working to replace three hoists and wire ropes within the control tower. The control tower is original to the dam, which was completed in 1952. East Branch Dam has prevented flood damages estimated to be more than $98 million, equivalent to $456 million in today’s dollars. A contractor used a helicopter to remove the first of three hoists.
