U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Timothy E. Gowen, adjutant general for Maryland, provides remarks alongside BiH Minister of Defense, Sifet Podžić, Minister of Security, Selmo Cikotić, and U.S. Ambassador Eric Nelson June 23 during a Civil Military Emergency Preparedness exercise in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The exercise focused on an earthquake scenario and how the Armed Forces of BiH would respond in support of the local Civil Protection Agency to provide emergency aid to those in need. Gowen’s attendance to the exercise marks his first visit to BiH. The Maryland National Guard is partnered with the AFBiH under the State Partnership Program, which is often leveraged to conduct bilateral military-to-military training for events such as these.
