Raymond Handrich, 36th Maintenance Group; Rear Adm. Benjamin Nicholson, commander, Joint Region Marianas, and Maj. Gen. Esther Aguigui, Guam National Guard adjutant general, render salutes during the Asan Beach Landing Memorial ceremony July 16. Military service members, local government officials and residents gathered to recall the U.S. military’s liberation of Guam during World War II. The site of the ceremony is where the 3rd Marine Division planted the U.S. flag after securing the beachhead. Approximately 55,000 Marines and Army soldiers participated in the battle for Guam.
