ASAN, Guam (July 19, 2021) - Asan-Maina Mayor Frankie Salas addresses attendees during the Asan Beach Landing Memorial ceremony July 16. Military service members, local government officials and residents gathered to recall the U.S. military’s liberation of Guam during World War II. The site of the ceremony is where the 3rd Marine Division planted the U.S. flag after securing the beachhead. Approximately 55,000 Marines and Army soldiers participated in the battle for Guam. More than 1,800 American service members were killed in action or died of wounds during the first 21 days of combat. (U.S. Navy photo by Shaina O’Neal)
