U.S. Army Pfc. Anthony Wong, a Soldier assigned to 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, D Company, assists a family receive donations from interagency partners at Fort Pickett, Virginia. Wong has performed a variety of tasks in support of Operation Allies Welcome, but currently helps manage the flow for the Humanitarian Aid center. There, he works with Team Rubicon, the Red Cross, and other volunteer organizations to ensure fair and orderly distribution of needed clothing and hygiene supplies. During his time with Task Force Pickett, Wong has also worked to in-process Afghans and help manage dining facility lines.
As a front-line worker, he works to find new ways to approach challenges. His team has experimented with various ways to manage lines at the distribution center, including using tickets and request sheets to ensure speedy and fair distributions. Wong describes his time at Fort Pickett as a great learning experience in how to deal with humanitarian aid situations.
The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
