U.S. Army 1st Lt. Patrick Caughey, a Soldier assigned to 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, serves as an operations officer in D Company, where he ensures the Mayor Cell and village operations go smoothly. As a part of his role, Caughey helps volunteers facilitate daily game nights for Afghan children at Fort Pickett. There, he combines teaching children simple English phrases with fun and games such as Duck Duck Goose. His own family, including a 1 year old daughter, serves as an inspiration for him as he interacts with Afghan children.
Caughey describes his work as “a good opportunity for U.S. Soldiers to be able to give kids a healthier, happier, and safer environment, where they can experience the joys of childhood without threats to their safety.”
The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. This initiative provides Afghan personnel essential support at secure locations outside Afghanistan. (U.S. Army Photo by 1st Lt. Eva Gould)
