U.S. Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) watch as an unmanned aerial vehicle operator prepares to launch a prototype unmanned aircraft system (UAS) aboard USS Germantown (LSD 42) while at sea, July 9, 2021. The 31st MEU supports force design experimentation with prototype vertical take-off landing UAS efforts in line with the Commandant’s Planning Guidance. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of the America Expeditionary Strike Group in the 7th fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific Region.
