Senior Master Sgt. Mark Hummer, a flight engineer assigned to the 139th Operations Group, Missouri Air National Guard, retires from military service at Rosecrans Air National Guard Base, St. Joseph, Missouri, Sept. 24, 2021. Hummer officially retired during the peak of the pandemic in 2020, but was recently recognized and presented with a Meritorious Service Medal for his accomplishments. Hummer began his military career with the 139th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron as an apprentice crew chief and eventually became a flight engineer with the 180th Airlift Squadron. He was the first flight engineer to be assigned to the Advanced Airlift Tactics Training Center where he created the syllabus for training students in the concepts of aircraft combat preparation and takeoff and landing data.
