Gabrielle Fialkoff, Commissioner, NYC Parks, and Adm. Karl L. Schultz, Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard, unveil the Coast Guard Memorial Plaza monument plaque at The Battery, Manhattan, New York, Oct. 4, 2021. The plaza is home to the newly rededicated Coast Guard Memorial which honors Coast Guard members who served during World War II. The sculpture depicts two Coast Guardsmen wearing combat uniforms with rifles slung, supporting a wounded African American service member and is believed to be first U.S. War Memorial depicting an interracial group of equal standing.
