Smothers retired as a quality assurance operations NCO and 92G food service instructor with the Illinois Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 129th Regiment (Regional Training Institute) based on Camp Lincoln in Springfield. He is shown shaking the hand of Col. Daniel Reichen, the commander of the 129th Regiment (RTI).
