U.S. Marines with Battalion Landing Team 1/5, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), await the arrival of an MV-22B Osprey with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265 (Rein.), 31st MEU, during MEU exercise (MEUEX) on Ie Shima, Okinawa, Japan, Dec. 17, 2021. Exercises such as helicopter raids reinforce the Marine Corps doctrine of a ready-and-mobile force capable of quick-response action. MEUEX is a pre-deployment training exercise that validates and reinforces the MEU’s mission capabilities across all of the Marine subordinate elements. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premiere crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
