U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Matthew Snelling, a machine gunner with Battalion Landing Team 1/5, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), watches for hostile activity during a helicopter raid during MEU exercise (MEUEX) on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, Dec. 17, 2021. Exercises such as helicopter raids reinforce the Marine Corps doctrine of a ready-and-mobile force capable of quick-response action. MEUEX is a pre-deployment training exercise that validates and reinforces the MEU’s mission capabilities across all of the Marine subordinate elements. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premiere crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
