Ford’s (CVN 78) ordnance handling officer, and Christopher Fry, construction supervisor, CVN 78 Advanced Weapons Elevator (AWE), sign a system turnover agreement with Huntington Ingalls Industries Newport News Shipbuilding for AWE 6 aboard Ford, Dec. 22, 2021. The AWE is an innovative Ford-class-specific technology that allows for the streamlining of weapons assembly and movement, and provides greater efficiencies with less manpower and maintenance requirements. Ford is in port at Newport News Shipyard executing her Planned Incremental Availability (PIA), a six-month period of modernization, maintenance and repairs.
