Congressman Mario Diaz Balart met Keen and initiated the renaming of the lock and dam. He was one of the Florida congressmen who proposed to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure requesting this language be included as part of the Water Resources and Development Act (WRDA) of 2020. The Moore Haven Lock and Dam was renamed on June 18, 2021, to the Julian Keen, Jr. Lock and Dam to honor the fallen Florida Fish and Wildlife Officer.
