Camp Zama community members enjoy a muddy foot race in a rice field prior to taking part in a rice-planting event there June 6 in nearby Zama City, Japan. The Zama International Association, along with Kizuna International, a group of student volunteers from Zama City, organized the bilateral event.
The group first acclimated themselves by running races, splashing around, and even falling backward in the wet, muddy field. Farmers and volunteers then instructed the group how to properly plant the rice, including how to keep them properly spaced apart by using a simple method involving a measured rope and two notched wooden boards.
Finally, the group worked together to plant several rows of rice, which the farmers said will be harvested in October.
