The climate, location and the surrounding infrastructure around the Pahokee Marina left it vulnerable to the rapid growth of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). In April of 2021, the level of toxins found by the Florida Department of Health was tested and showed that there were 860 parts per billion of the toxin microcystin. In addition, Lake Okeechobee is not only a source used for recreation, but it provides water for: drinking, agriculture, and freshwater that feeds into the Everglades. As a result, the Department of Health in Palm Beach County tested surface water samples on November 30, 2021, warning the public should exercise caution in this area. USACE is currently researching and developing technology focused on freshwater Harmful Algal Blooms detection, prevention, and management tools. (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Photo by Brigida I.
