On April 27, 2021, a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) outbreak worsens as it is trapped within the Pahokee Marinas infrastructure. The conditions were perfect for a HAB outbreak; the lake's shallow depth, warm temperatures, and the number of nutrients released into the lake by various sources. While the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has no authority to manage water quality in Florida, we work closely with and support the efforts of state agencies that do have responsibility over water quality issues. The State of Florida is the lead on the much-needed restoration of the water quality in Lake Okeechobee. USACE is currently researching and developing technology focused on freshwater Harmful Algal Blooms detection, prevention, and management tools. (Photo by Brigida I. Sanchez)
