Robert Jones, a soil microbiologist with the Soil Microbiology research team at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, prepares a syringe, which will be injected into a vessel containing soil. This test monitors the fluctuations in electricity production by the microorganisms living within the soil to establish a disturbance pattern, which can be used as a baseline for future research to identify what external elements have interacted with soil through pattern recognition or machine learning techniques.
