Robert Jones, a soil microbiologist with the Soil Microbiology research team at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, holds up a soil microbial fuel cell. The low-powered fuel cell harnesses energy from the contained microorganisms as they degrade organic matter within the soil. As the matter is processed, the energy being produced illuminates an LED light fixed to the top of the fuel cell.
