U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. James Nelson accomplishes being the first African American to hold the position of State Command Sergeant Major of the Georgia Army National Guard. In 2010, Nelson was appointed senior enlisted advisor of the Georgia Department of Defense. He retired in 2012 after 38 years of military service.
