220214-N-EV253-1101 SAN DIEGO (Feb. 14, 2022) – Vice Adm. Kenneth Whitesell (right), Commander, U.S. Naval Air Forces, awards a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal to Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Jerome Brown, assigned to the “Merlins” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 3, Feb. 14. Whitesell awarded 11 Navy Air Medals, 18 Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals and four Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals to Brown and other HSC-3 Sailors for exemplary volunteer action in support of nighttime aerial firefighting operations while battling the fire aboard the former USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) on July 12, 2020. In total, HSC-3 executed 1,649 aerial drops, resulting in 545,076 gallons of water dropped on Bonhomme Richard, and flew a combined 110.9 flight hours amongst 26 crews.
