220214-N-EV253-1028 SAN DIEGO (Feb. 14, 2022) – Cmdr. Evan Young, executive officer of the “Merlins” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 3, and 10 other HSC-3 Sailors are awarded Navy Air Medals by Commander, U.S. Naval Air Forces, Feb. 14. Eighteen Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals and four Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals were also awarded to other HSC-3 Sailors for exemplary volunteer action in support of nighttime aerial firefighting operations while battling the fire aboard the former USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) on July 12, 2020. In total, HSC-3 executed 1,649 aerial drops, resulting in 545,076 gallons of water dropped on Bonhomme Richard, and flew a combined 110.9 flight hours amongst 26 crews.
