(2) Sgt. Keijuanaky Seales, a supply clerk with the Iowa Army National Guard Sustainment Training Center, smiles for a portrait at Camp Dodge on Feb. 25, 2022. After seeing an Army commercial in eighth grade, Seales felt an instant connection – “That’s me. That’s what I should be,” Seales said. In 2014, with encouragement from her sister and brother-in-law, she talked to a recruiter at her high school in Chicago and enlisted. The rest of her family was unsure of her decision, having had family members who were drafted in the past. “It was very blinding. I absolutely didn’t know what I got myself into, and my family was very confused. But now they see how I’ve grown, how much more potential I have with my life. I’m thriving as an adult, I’m strong-minded and motivated, thanks to the military. We never had cars, but I bought my first car with support from my battle buddies, and then I taught my older siblings to drive. I’m not the only one who benefits, my family does too, because I pass that knowledge on.” (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Tawny Schmit)
